ABOUT CARRIE

I’m Carrie Stalk, a New York-based Director and Cinematographer known for crafting intimate, character-driven narratives and bringing a collaborative, action-oriented leadership style to every set. I grew up in the Northeast and attended Michigan State University for college. It was there I discovered that my passion for the process of creation, taking satisfying ownership over a product from start to finish, and the joy of fostering camaraderie among creative teams made filmmaking my natural creative path. With over a decade of media leadership, I expertly combine the artistic vision of a Director and Director of Photography with the strategic oversight of a Producer.

My history began in docu-style television, as a producer for HGTV’s House Hunters International. Thrown into the fire, that experience taught me to be quick on my feet, cultivating my reputation as a problem solving expert who excels in fast-paced, unpredictable environments. This scrappy, adaptive style provided a holistic understanding of the creative production process: from varying roles to the end-to-end creation process across mediums.

My technical strength lies in the art of cinematography, specifically the expert execution of digital camera and lighting systems. This includes deep practical knowledge of professional cinema camera platforms, such as ARRI, RED, Sony, and Blackmagic, and comprehensive lighting design. I combine this on-set with essential pre-production logistics (including budgeting and schedule building), and knowledge of the post-production process to achieve a seamless final product. Complemented by proficiency in industry standard software like DaVinci Resolve, the Adobe Creative Suite, and Figma.

My core philosophy dictates that the story always comes first. My visual approach blends cinematic storytelling with a refined and painterly look, favoring naturalistic light and nostalgic texture to build intimate narratives. Still, I always tailor the aesthetic to the story/project for both narrative projects and commercials for global brands, including Netflix, Louis Vuitton, Google, Vogue, and Amazon Prime Video.

Clients value the temperament I bring to complex productions: a calm and confident presence and a problem solver’s instinct. My mantra on set is that there is always a solution, no matter how unconventional, to get an equal or better result. I find immense reward in the creative relationships I build with my collaborators, where every victory is a team win.

My award-winning narrative work has been recognized nationally and internationally. The short film Cyclone was a winner at Katra Film Festival 2021 and a three time winner at Indie Short Fest 2020. I directed photography on the multi award nominated short film Green Juice. I am currently executing an Oscar qualifying festival strategy for my LGBTQ+ drama short film, The Salt Between Us, targeting major venues like Palm Springs, Rotterdam, TIFF, SXSW, and Cannes.

Outside of filmmaking, I spend time at the rock climbing gym, meditating, or playing guitar. I also love exploring food and flavor through cooking and baking, keeping a detailed journal of what I eat and drink when I’m out. I’m currently pursuing my WSET sommelier certification.
